About Us

The Black Infant Health Practice Initiative is committed to addressing issues affecting Black infant mortality. Infant mortality refers to deaths of children under the age of one year. With the community at the center of the Initiative, grassroots organizations, faith institutions, health care providers, educators, caregivers, lawmakers and the scientific community are working together to promote healthy births and reduce the black infant mortality disparity in Florida.

In a short period, the BIHPI partners have been able to work together to determine some of the reasons for the disparity and to develop, implement and evaluate strategies to keep our babies alive and healthy. We are very proud of the work that we’ve done thus far and are committed to continuing until the disparity no longer exits.

Mission & Goals

  • Determine the social, economic, and health system factors that are associated with racial disparities in infant mortality in their community.

  • Develop a series of interventions and policies designed to address these factors.

  • Through a community engagement process, implement the system changes that are needed to address racial disparities.

  • Develop an evaluation plan to determine the effectiveness of each intervention.
